WHY, HOW & WHEN TO WORK WITH A WARDROBE STYLIST –
Why You Should Get Help From A Stylist – It can be a “life-changing” experience!
Do any of these statements describe your viewpoint or the current status of your wardrobe?
- Working with a stylist is something you’ve always thought “other people” do.
- You already know “it’s too expensive” to have a personal consultant.
- Your style is “all over the place”. Does your wardrobe suffer from “multiple personality disorder?
- The thought of packing coordinating outfits for a 10 day trip sends you into a tizzy.
- Are you unsure of your “personal style”? Does trying to articulate your style to someone else give you the heebie-jeebies?
- Have you thought about how cool it would be to work with a stylist, but haven’t been able to take the “plunge”?
It could be that you are exactly the person who should be reading this post. Why not find out a little more on the subject, what do you think?
ALSO, DON’T MISS THE FIRST INSTALLMENT OF MY WARDROBE JOURNEY WITH “STITCH FIX” LATER IN THIS POST. I JUST GOT THE FIRST “FIX” FROM MY STYLIST, MASON. SOOO COOL Y’ALL!
YOU KNOW WHO IRIS APFEL IS, RIGHT? No? Oh yes you do, you just didn’t know her name — but you know her GLASSES!
Now this is a gal who has not only “defined” her sense of style, but has “perfected” it over the last six decades!
I love this quote, because it let’s us “off the hook”. It says that we don’t have to have it all figured out yet.
We can find our “self expression” and a new ATTITUDE moving forward, toward realizing our own personal style. It’s a journey after all…
Looking inward and learning more about how we “feel” about and what our wardrobe “represents” to us is a great way to begin the journey.
Today we’ll dive deep into the “WHY”…
THE BIG “WHY” – 5 REASONS YOU SHOULD GET HELP FROM A STYLIST
First, let’s discuss the basic three camps that we all fall into on the subject of wardrobe stylists or image consultants.
- She knows what a stylist or image consultant is, but has either decided she can’t afford one or “isn’t ready”.
- These women have no idea what a stylist is or that people actually hire them for their expertise.
- The third gal has either worked or had a consultation with a stylist in the past or still does.
Second, I’ll tell you exactly what a wardrobe stylist can do for you, and what a valuable resource they can become.
STYLISTS CAN HELP YOU TO FIND & CREATE THE IMAGE YOU WOULD LIKE TO “SHOW THE WORLD”
It may be a cliché, BUT it couldn’t be more true in this “digital age”:
“you only have one chance to make a first impression”
It seems that many of us are using social media almost daily. That, combined with using the internet to promote our business or products, makes us very visible. This makes your image so much more important, as it conveys so much about you.
One picture can tell someone your level of success, status, character, personality, or even your “image”. It’s totally up to their interpretation…
Whether you like it or not, this is the sad fact. Most people formulate an opinion about you based solely on what you are wearing and how you carry yourself. A stylist can help you to align your “inner” image with your “outer” image that the the rest of us actually see.
Does that thought strike fear in your heart, or even make you a little sick? DON’T WORRY. It’s never too late to start figuring out exactly what YOUR PERSONAL STYLE is.
THE “RIGHT” STYLIST CAN BECOME PART OF YOUR “LIFESTYLE SUPPORT SYSTEM”
You already have a “lifestyle support system” in place, you just might not look at it that way. You’ve surrounded yourself with people, tradesmen and professional services that help you streamline your life and best use your resources.
What happened when it came time to getting a little help in the “image” department? You never even considered it, did you? Why not?
Many people spend lots of time preparing for a meeting or appointment, but only spend 5 minutes deciding what to wear and how to present themselves. What does this say about us?
Okay, maybe the meeting is really important, BUT, wouldn’t it be fabulous to only NEED 5 minutes to figure out what you’ll wear to “wow” them?
A wardrobe stylist can do just that for your wardrobe and your entire closet’s contents in general. No problemo!
NEVER AGAIN WILL YOU SAY, “I haven’t a thing to wear!”
We’ve all been there. Standing in front of our closets, stuffed full of clothes.
We turn away, sigh, and ask ourselves why, once again, we have absolutely nothing to wear.
Most people have more clothes than they could wear in 6 months, but somehow still can’t find “that outfit”.
You know the one, it makes you feel so good when you put in on. You stand a little taller, straighten your shoulders and tell the world “I’m ready to conquer!”
But sadly, you can’t actually FIND that outfit in your closet.
MOST LIKELY CULPRITS: Clothing that is outdated, ill-fitting, soiled, in disrepair or “doesn’t match anything I own!”
A wardrobe stylist will sort through and arrange your closet in a way that makes sense, especially to you. By first going through the clothing you already own, the stylist can get a great “picture” of who you “think” you are. (LOL)
Most importantly, your stylist will assess your body, personal and professional image and lifestyle. This will help them to determine what will work for you when curating a wardrobe that will fit all of your needs.
So far this wardrobe stylist thing sounds pretty fabulous, doesn’t it?
YOUR CLOSET WILL ONLY CONTAIN CLOTHING THAT FITS YOU PERFECTLY AND IS YOUR “PERSONAL STYLE”
Stylists have developed relationships with stores, designers, and tailors throughout their careers. This gives them the unique ability to find clothes that fit your body type, coloring, and professional brand/image. Professional stylists are also known for getting great deals too!
A good stylist will shop different stores and designers to assemble a wardrobe that aligns with your needs and budget. They’ll also make sure the new pieces will seamlessly integrate into your existing wardrobe. That’s kind of the whole point, right? We’re not starting from scratch at our age, no way José!
After a few sessions your stylist will know which designers work for you and which ones to avoid.
PACKING FOR TRAVEL WILL BE A PLEASURE, NOT A PAIN IN THE…
Packing for a trip, whether for business or pleasure, can be overwhelming. It can be even more stressful when you feel like you have nothing to wear.
What kind of “color capsule travel wardrobe” can you put together if nothing goes with anything else? And the one jacket that goes with your favorite outfit is missing the top button…
Whether you’ll be in a cold or warm climate, meeting with clients or just enjoying drinks on the lido deck, all need to be considered when packing your suitcase. Once a wardrobe stylist has worked their magic on your closet, packing will be just “one more thing” on your travel “to-do” list!
YOUR OWN PERSONAL STYLE – It’s as “personal” as it gets!
Working with a stylist is a very personal process. It can be a one-on-one experience, with just a “closet consult” that gets you out of the starting block.
OR, you could also go whole hog and contract with a wardrobe stylist for a specified period of time/number of appointments.
OR, try out an online “wardrobe styling service” like Stitch Fix, Trunk Club or Allume.
WHY YOU SHOULD GET HELP FROM A STYLIST? I’m testing it out for you my lovelies, and I’m going to take you with me every step of the way!
Have you ever heard of “Stitch Fix”? I had, AND I finally checked them out…
HERE’S A BRIEF OVERVIEW OF HOW STITCH FIX WORKS
Mind you, I have checked out Stitch Fix in the past. As I’m always looking for what’s new in my very own “www.com”, the Wonderful World of Wardrobes! Hence my love of In Style magazine, especially the September issue!
Stitch Fix is a great “shopping service” that allows you to work with a stylist. They shop for you, according to your style profile preferences, and then deliver your personalized “FIX” to your doorstep.
How Stitch Fix Sign-Up Works:
- Tell them your price range, size & style. You’ll pay just a $20 styling fee, which gets credited toward pieces you keep.
- Get a “Fix” when you want. Try on pieces at home before you buy, keep your favorites and send back the rest.
- Free shipping, returns & exchanges—a prepaid return envelope is included. There are no hidden fees, ever.
- No subscription required. Try Stitch Fix once or set up automatic deliveries.
BEFORE I KNEW IT, I’D SCHEDULED MY FIRST “FIX”!
So, here’s how the Stitch Fix sign-up went down: (it took about 10 minutes)
- General sign up info input
- Sizes you are currently wearing
- Preferred fit (loose, tight, etc.)
- What colors are a No-No?
- Denim fit preferences (waist, skinny, boot-cut, etc.)
- Stores you currently buy from
- Jewelry styles (gold, silver, pierced ear, etc.)
- Occasion frequency (office wear/casual/night out/special events)
- Adventurous Level (never/sometimes/always)
- Price range you use by category (outerwear, shoes, dresses, etc.)
- Personal info
- Notes to your stylist
- SCHEDULE A “FIX”!
NEXT, I TOOK A FEW “POP-QUIZZES” TO “REFINE” MY STYLE PROFILE
With less than eight minutes more of my precious “BREAK” from my closet clean-out duties, I took a few pop-quizzes. These 1-2 minute quizzes are designed to help REFINE your personal style profile for your stylist’s use.
The quizzes are not mandatory when you do your Stitch Fix sign up. But, if you click on your profile icon in the top right corner, it takes you to the profile page with the quizzes. Here’s the topics they cover:
- What’s In Your Closet?
- Fit Challenges
- Distressed Denim
You’ll find that taking the mini-quizzes AND adding personal “notes to your stylist” are essential steps in the process.
NOW THIS IS WHY YOU SHOULD GET HELP FROM A STYLIST! I’m pumped!
WHAT HAPPENED NEXT – My “Fix” arrived, a few days early too!
Once I retrieved the box from our package cabin, I could hardly wait to climb the mountain and tear it open! (no, not literally)
I opened the box and found a personalized note from my stylist, Mason, and a “receipt” showing the prices and potential 25% discount if I chose to keep all 5 pieces.
It also had a sheet (pictured here) that showed each of the items styled 2 different ways. Great inspirational ideas. Loved that!
HERE’S WHAT WAS IN MY FIRST “FIX”:
- Tamra Cowl Neck Zipper Detail Cotton Blend Pullover
- Vera Moda Ozette Belted Blazer
- Liverpool Tinsley High-Rise Skinny Jeans (dark wash)
- Lauren Ralph Lauren Kristy Button Down Blouse
- Market & Spruce Sylvie Honeycomb Boatneck Pullover
After you answer strategic questions and take the style quizzes, you can write a personal note to your stylist.
When I received my “fix”, I found that my wardrobe stylist, Mason, had written me a note back. She encouraged me to let her know exactly what worked for me and what didn’t.
Mason also mentioned that she’s keeping an eye out for “polished” casual pieces that I had asked for. Perfect. I’m attending TravelCon in May and am looking for the right pieces to add to my Spring travel wardrobe capsule.

I also indicated that I had trouble fitting denims on my 5’1″ petite frame. Lo and behold, she hunted down a brand (Liverpool) that she thought would work for me and included them in this “fix”. Just wait, I’ll show them to you in a minute. Patience, Grasshopper!
HERE’S WHAT MASON SENT IN MY FIRST “FIX” FROM STITCH FIX:
TRYING ON MY “FIX” TURNED INTO A “FASHION SHOW” – What a blast!
I drafted H.H. for a “fashion shoot”, in the loosest sense of the term, I assure you. I’m no fashion model (at 5’1″, I think not) and H.H. is in no way a fashion photographer. But, we gave it our best and here’s the results. What do you think of my first “Fix” from Stitch Fix?
WHY YOU SHOULD GET HELP FROM A STYLIST – What Did You Think?
- How do you think Mason did in picking out my first “fix” pieces?
- Did you think all the items fit my petite frame well?
- What pieces do you think I should have kept? (TELL ME IN THE COMMENT SECTION BELOW THIS POST)
- What do you think I kept? What did I return? (Not a fair question, ’cause you don’t know what’s in my closet)
FEEDBACK FOR MY STYLIST
Once I had decided what I would keep and return, I answered detailed questions to give Mason specific feedback on each piece of clothing she sent. Here’s what questions I answered for each of the items:
- Size? (Too small / Just right / Too big)
- Fit/Cut + any specific issues with sleeves, hems, shoulders, etc.?
MY NEXT “FIX” IS SCHEDULED TO ARRIVE ON MARCH 3RD — STAY TUNED FOR “MY STITCH FIX JOURNEY – PT. 2
