I’ve created two lovely versions of my Printable Rosh Hashanah Seder Simanim for you to use at your High Holiday celebration.
Most Jews are familiar with the traditional Passover Seder meal celebrated in the Spring. Some families may not celebrate Rosh Hashanah with a High Holiday “Seder Program” that accompanies a strict observance of the holiday.
During a Rosh Hashanah Seder we partake of the traditional foods that hold a special meaning, especially when eaten following their specific blessings.
These blessings are contained in a “Simanim”, which literally translates into “signs or indicators”. The signs are meant to point the way to improving our current situation or circumstances. Be it in ancient times or now, I think of these blessings as “wishes” for the New Year. It’s a nice way to view the prayers, don’t you agree?
Two of the most familiar symbolic foods for Rosh Hashanah are apples and honey. But there are very specific foods that are also necessary for celebrating the Jewish New Year.
Some of the most popular foods used to symbolize Rosh Hashanah include:
We say the name of each food from the Seder plate and recite a blessing over the item before eating it.
This is the blessing for a bountiful life that we say over the pomegranate:
“May it be Your will, Hashem, our G-D and G-d of our forefathers, that our merits increase as the seeds of a pomegranate.”
And one way the Jewish people do exactly that is by performing mitzvot throughout the year that help us be worthy of G-d’s blessings for the new year.
I find that giving a Rosh Hashanah Seder Simanim to each of my guests really makes the whole ceremony much more enjoyable.
