Are you just dying to go on a romantic Spring getaway? But packing a long weekend travel capsule makes you cringe and procrastinate?
Today I’m going to teach you how to pack a Spring Long Weekend Travel Capsule! After reading this article, you’ll have no reason not to book your romantic Spring getaway, right now, today!
Especially when you use my favorite packing tool, the LIFESTYLE DIVA “LONG WEEKENDER” TRAVEL CAPSULE OUTFIT PLANNER.
It’s got two pages to help you fully “flesh” out exactly what you’ll be wearing, from head to toe!
And once you’ve read the LIFESTYLE DIVA APPROACH to packing, you’ll see I mean that quite literally!
I’ll tell you how to get a copy later in this post.
I’ll start with some general concepts, then we’ll deep dive into exactly what items should be in your long weekend travel capsule.
FIRST, YOU’LL NEED TO PICK THE “RIGHT” BAG TO TAKE
What the “right bag” is for any given trip depends on several different factors:
When packing for a long weekend, I suggest a soft-sided bag. They’re easy to carry and can fit in some tight spaces during transport.
Especially the trunk of a sports car! I bought a pair of attractive large-sized “totes” several years ago, and they’re still going strong!
Packing cubes come in all shapes and sizes, making it easy to stay organized and provide quick access to your things. I never leave home on a longer trip without them, but I find they can be quite useful, even when packing for a long weekend getaway.
On a long trip I might unpack my things into the closet or drawers. But, for a shorter romantic Spring getaway, I just grab items straight from my cubes.
Keeping all my undergarments, socks and hose in separate cubes helps me pull together my planned outfits swiftly and with ease. That’s what my mantra, “pack like a pro, dress like a Diva” is all about!
HOW TO BUILD THE PERFECT TOILETRIES BAG – For Any Length Trip!
When it comes to picking what to pack and take in my toiletries bag, I’ve got the system down. I wrote an entire article on the subject, just so you will always know how to build the perfect toiletry bag!
Here’s the link to get the whole scoop: How to Build the Perfect Toiletry Bag – Plus 2020 Carry-On Rules
Very, very carefully! Actually, it’s lots of fun putting together a long “weekender” travel capsule for the different seasons of the year. Today I’m teaching you how to build a “Spring” long weekend travel capsule.
So let’s get down and dirty… Not really, I was not a child that made “mud pies”, I only wanted to bake the real thing! Can I interest you in some hot tea and a piece of my Elderberry-Lavender Lattice Top Pie? But I digress…
DON’T YOU JUST HATE THE TIRED, OLD, “FIT TAB “a” INTO SLOT “b”, KIND OF TRAVEL CAPSULE ADVICE?
I don’t understand why travel experts boil down what can be a fabulous travel capsule experience, into the directions on how to assemble a bookshelf.
Packing for a long weekend getaway shouldn’t be Geometry. Their advice just ends up looking like a sad equation for boring and generic vacation outfits:
Neither am I a fan of the “minimalist” packing systems so popular with traveling nomads these days. I’m not traveling for months at a time, I’m just jetting off for a romantic Spring weekend getaway! I’d like to pack a few “extras”, thank you!
So, in the end, what kind of help is this for someone looking for advice on packing for a long weekend?
I never felt like this type of advice was worth my time, so I went about developing my own travel capsule packing system.
It’s really just an extension of my LIFESTYLE DIVA WARDROBE COLOR CAPSULE SYSTEM.
From years of research and testing with my own wardrobe, I finally have a system that works and is easily duplicatable.
I’ll be telling you more about that in future posts!
Well, forget that advice! I’ve never been one to “go along to get along”. If H.H. and I are “people watching” while enjoying a cocktail at an outdoor cafe, do I have to be wearing tan capri’s (tab “a”) with a white top (slot “b”)? I think not!
Now, having said that, and not wanting to injure anyone’s feelings, I love neutrals! The entire backbone of my closet’s contents are neutrals, as yours should be too.
Because, that’s how you begin to build a fabulous Color Capsule Wardrobe. But, you need not be tied to tons of rules when packing for a little romantic Spring getaway, as you’ll soon see!
The Spring long weekend travel capsule I’m showing you today contains one neutral, WHITE!
Not a black or tan item in sight, and I mean, none… I did tell you we were packing for Spring, right?
I’ve worn enough black this winter to satisfy my “fix”, as I’m a true lover of a monochrome black “look”. But not if I’m looking for a little Spring romance in my life!
The colors in this Spring “weekender” travel capsule are: WHITE/YELLOW/PINK/ORANGE
HAVE I SCARED YOU YET? ARE YOU THINKING, “IS SHE A LITTLE NUTS?”
I know, you thought I was going to be showing you pastels, didn’t you?
AHA! That’s actually something I’ll be talking about in my next fashion lesson, HOW TO USE PASTELS AS NEUTRALS!
Actually, since it’s been such a dark and dreary Winter here in Western North Carolina, I wanted to “throw Winter out the window”. As we’ll be heading South to warmer weather, I wanted to finally feel “free” of Winter’s grip. And this travel capsule surely does that, and with lots of style too.
I’m working under the premise that a “long weekend” is comprised of traveling to your destination on a Thursday and leaving Sunday afternoon or evening. That means you’ll need a “minimum” of 6 outfits for a romantic Spring getaway.
Here’s the outfits you’ll need for your long weekend:
Conventional travel wisdom tells you to pack a minimum of pieces, wear them several times each, and make them all match.
Well, I’m with them on having everything in your long weekend travel capsule match or coordinate with each other. And, I can even get behind wearing an item more than once. But, as I am a person that loves white, it doesn’t always work that way. I can’t always keep a white garment clean enough for a second wear.
So, my long “weekender” travel capsule contains 8 pieces that can be mixed or matched into as many combinations as you can imagine.
If an item is “unwearable” a second time, no worries, you’ve planned for that eventuality!
I don’t think those “travel experts” have ever eaten a platter of CAJUN SMOTHERED FRIES! (why yes, that IS a Large Pizza Pan!)
(WE ENJOYED THIS “APPETIZER” IN LONG BEACH, CALIFORNIA – you can read the whole Traveling Wolves Journal Entry here: Did Lucy & Ricky Take the Long, Long Trailer to Long Beach?).
I’ve really taken all the “worry” out of packing a long weekend travel capsule.
My long weekend travel capsule gives you permission to eat, drink and be merry. And a little messy too, if the occasion calls for it! Even a Diva gets dirty sometimes!
The real secret to a truly fabulous long weekend travel capsule is taking the right accessories, shoes and jewelry! That’s what elevates your weekend outfits into “diva” status, instead of a bag full of boring navy, tan and white outfits.
Exactly what footwear, accessories and jewelry you’ll need for your romantic Spring getaway will depend on several different factors.
And my reply always is, it depends. After you answer the above questions about your trip activities, you’ll be able to determine what shoes you’ll need.
For the travel capsule I’m showing you today, we’re heading to Amelia Island, Florida. Mostly “city” stuff, and maybe a romantic horseback ride on a “Tennessee Walking Horse” along the beach. No hiking boots, cargo pants or snorkels necessary!
I’m wearing my “walking shoes” and packing my wedge-heeled sandals and tennis shoes. So three pairs of shoes are going in my long weekend travel capsule.
Now that’s an answer I can give you right off the bat! Two.
I recommend carrying a larger, tote-style “travel purse” that can carry all your personal gear. It’s so simple to toss in my sunglasses, phone, wallet, lipstick and a pair of slipper socks for the car/plane. (I like to be comfy, so sue me!)
Your second purse will depend on your activities. If I’m heading out for evenings “on the town”, I’ll pack a clutch.
But when I’m planning on sightseeing, dropping into galleries or taking a local food tour, a crossbody is my purse of choice.
And if we’re doing some major antiquing or hitting all the shops in town, a cute designer backpack fits the bill. It really just depends on how you’ll be spending your time during your long weekend getaway.
And that’s how you’ll know which purses to pack in your long weekend travel capsule.

I fell in love with Audrey Hepburn, Doris Day and Katherine Hepburn very early in my life. Watching them in the movies with their matching chemise, coat, hat and gloves made me swoon!
Hence, I learned how to tie an “Audrey” styled headscarf long ago. It’s officially known as the “kelly scarf”, by the way! I won’t ride in a convertible without one! Not because of my hair necessarily, I just love to “channel” a touch of Audrey’s elegance from the day!
If you’re going on a romantic Spring getaway, you just might want to “channel” a little Audrey yourself!
HERE’S HOW TO TIE THE PERFECT “AUDREY” HEADSCARF
Now that you’ve gotten your first “Lifestyle Diva” Travel Wardrobe Capsule Lesson, I know you are!
I’ve given you all the information on how to pack for a long weekend and build your own travel wardrobe capsule you need.
Now go somewhere fun and get a little frisky with your sweetie this Spring!
I’m one that tends to like to have a “hard copy” of my outfit combos tucked into my luggage when I travel.
I remember being on an 11 night cruise many years ago and there were two days remaining. But, unfortunately the clean items that I had left didn’t actually make any outfits!
It was a 15 day trip, and I wore the “wrong” outfit combos somewhere along the way.
I was left with a mishmash of pieces I had to cobble together into some kind of outfits. Embarrassing to say the least!
But, you learn from your experiences. I’ve since developed systems that keep me looking fabulous from the first to last day of my travels. That’s the Lifestyle Diva Way!
I’m sharing with you one of the wardrobe packing tools I use to keep myself “on track” from Day 1 – Day Whatever when I travel.
This particular version has been adapted specifically for a Spring Long Weekend Travel Capsule, as shown in the chart above.
Packing for a long weekend can be just as stressful as a long trip for some people, so I hope my Planner will be helpful to you. (YOU CAN LET ME KNOW IN THE COMMENTS BELOW THIS POST)
