Rich and buttery, this Homemade Salted Caramel Sauce is silky smooth and not too sweet.  It’s pure perfection with just a pinch of fluer de sel to give it a fabulous “finish”!  Served over ice cream, fresh pineapple spears or baked apples, it’s equally delicious.

Homemade Salted Caramel Sauce

Yield: 1 cup
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 10 minutes
Total Time: 20 minutes

Rich and buttery, this silky smooth caramel sauce is perfect with just a pinch of fluer de sel to give it a fabulous "finish"! Served over ice cream or baked apples, it's equally delicious.


  • 1 cup granulated white sugar
  • 6 Tbsp. salted butter, room temperature, cut in 6 chunks
  • 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 1 tsp. fleur de sel (French salt)


  1. In a medium saucepan, add the sugar and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly. Eventually, it will start forming clumps of sugar and melt into a thick, amber liquid in the pan. Take care to stir and watch it carefully so it doesn't burn.
  2. As soon as the sugar is completely melted, carefully add all the butter. The mixture will bubble up, so take care to keep your distance. Change to a whisk and quickly stir the butter into the sugar until it's completely melted. If the mixture separates, remove it from the heat and continue whisking until the butter is reincorporated. (this could take a few minutes!)
  3. With the pan over medium heat, slowly drizzle in the heavy cream. The cold cream will make the mixture rapidly bubble. Let the mixture simmer for 1-2 minutes. Remove from heat, add salt and stir to combine.
  4. Allow to cool for 5 minutes before serving. Cover tightly and store in refrigerator for up to one month. SEE NOTE


Salted Caramel Sauce solidifies in the refrigerator. Reheat in the microwave or on the stove.
