I’d been thinking of doing an end of the summer theme party since early spring. I finally came up with a concept that really gave me a thrill. I’d use the magical feeling of our “treehouse-like” lower deck to throw a Fairies in the Forest Twilight Soiree.
Wow, I knew this was going to be a fabulous party after having had so much fun planning and creating the theme decor, tablesettings and menu.
My brainstorming session seemed to never end as I got such great inspiration from the nature around me. The ideas kept flowing and I kept creating.
My usual modus-operandi when conceptualizing a themed party is to decide on a rough concept and then go scavenging.
My inspiration can come from almost anywhere. Maybe something that’s been tucked away in my vast array of decor items will move me. Or perhaps a movie that I recently watched, or even something as simple as a magazine photograph.
You’re going to laugh, but this whole fairy and forest theme party started with me seeing a picture of a bushel of plums.
Yep, I wanted to work in all the late summer produce colors and I landed on purple plums. Now you know how the color scheme became various shades of purple, pink, green with a touch of orange. This choice of colors would really highlight all the menu items on the buffet.
This is the kind of party concept that bends and shifts with your personal style and preferences. And most importantly, what natural element resources you have available.
I myself live high on a mountaintop in Western North Carolina and have what I happily refer to as a “moss store” outside my doorstep.
I regularly forage for mosses, branches, curly willow, pine cones and bark. Then I sort and store them away for one of my home decor projects, theme parties or even gifts for the winter holidays. And that’s exactly why moss craft projects are an integral part of the fairy and forest theme’s decor.
If you’re a lucky gal and have nearby parks, hiking trails or even a golf course, you’ll have a great start. I scour our golf course and find fabulous things, especially in the fall after the course is closed. No groundskeepers to swipe up my booty to add to their compost pile. At least I wouldn’t have to purchase any of this type of stuff!
Living out in the boondocks doesn’t give you a ton of shopping alternatives. So Amazon and Michael’s delivering everything I need to my doorstep is a gift from above!
Each time I travel into the nearest city, it’s an hour-and-a-half round-trip drive, so I plan my trips carefully.
Anyway, my linen stockpile didn’t really have too much in the way of purple. So, yes, I did go a little nuts in designing and creating the napkins, table runners and centerpieces.
I don’t usually do so many “hands-on” crafty elements for one party, but this theme lends itself to DIY projects.
The menu was served buffet-style, and the deck set up, lit and decorated in the party’s theme. I started the party at twilight in the top deck seating area, where I served the hor d’oeurves and cocktails to our guests.
Wait till see the fabulous custom cocktail I served… it matched the party’s decor! Very cool…
I practice what I preach! As you can see in this image, I do a “pre-party” buffet set up to test out the arrangement of my serving dishes/platters. This way I can make sure it will flow easily to have my guests serve themselves.
(this tip is included in my 11 Tips to Throw a Fabulous Party PDF)
NAN’S TIP: KEEP THE DRIPPY OR MESSIER FOODS AT THE FRONT OF THE BUFFET!
Notice how I have my platters and bowls at different heights for both display purposes and ease of serving. This is an old catering trick I’ve used for decades at my gigs to help showcase the displayed foods.
You see I’ve used lengths of different coordinating fabrics to cover my “lifts” on the table. It’s a great way to pull your theme’s colors onto your buffet.
Once you’re satisfied with the arrangement, place the serving utensils next to the serving dishes. That way your guests won’t be left without a serving spoon in your rush to “drop” the food on the buffet for dinner service.
The buffet was so colorful with the seasonal produce shining brightly in the moonlight! Especially dishes like the Rainbow Tomato Tart and Mexicali Steak Salad Platter, which were both easy, delicious, yet stunning in their simplicity.

With that in mind, I created the PDF menu you see above for you to print out and use on your buffet. I used an adorable font to keep the vibe of your party magical and “fairy-like”!
