I’d been thinking of doing an end of the summer theme party since early spring, and finally came up with a concept that really gave me a thrill when I started brainstorming the ideas for the color scheme, decor, tablesetting and menu.
My usual modus-operandi when conceptualizing a themed party is to decided on a rough concept and then go scavenging. My inspiration can come from something that’s been tucked away in my vast array of decor items from my catering days, a movie that I recently watched, or even something as simple as a magazine photograph. (yes, I still get printed magazines delivered)
HOW DO YOU PICK A THEME?
You’re going to laugh, but this whole fairy and forest theme party started with me seeing a picture of a bushel of plums, yep, I wanted to work in all the late summer produce colors and I landed on purple plums. And that’s how the Fairies of the Forest Twilight Soiree was born. Now you know how the color scheme became various shades of purple, pink, green and a touch of orange that would help highlight the menu choices.
This is the kind of party concept that bends and shifts with your personal style, tastes and most importantly, what natural element resources you have available. I myself live high on a mountaintop in Western North Carolina and have what I happily refer to as a “moss store” outside my doorstep.
I regularly forage for mosses, branches, curly willow, pine cones and bark, sort them and store them away for one of my home decor projects, theme parties or even gifts for the winter holidays. And that’s exactly why moss craft projects are an integral part of the fairy and forest theme’s decor.
WHAT ARE YOUR NATURAL RESOURCES?
If you’re a lucky gal and have nearby parks, hiking trails or even a golf course, you’ll have a great start. I scour our golf course and find fabulous things, especially in the fall after the course is closed. No groundskeepers to swipe up my booty and add it to their compost pile.
Living out in the boondocks does not give you a ton of shopping alternatives, so Amazon and Michael’s delivering everything I need to my doorstep is a gift from above! Each time I travel into the nearest city it’s an hour-and-a-half round-trip drive, so I plan my trips into town carefully.
Anyway, I didn’t really have too much in the way of purple, so I did go a little nuts in designing and creating the napkins, table runners, centerpieces, buffet decor, etc. I don’t usually do so many “hands-on” crafty specialty elements for one party, but this theme lends itself to DIY projects.
IT FEELS LIKE A TREE HOUSE
The menu was served on a buffet on the lower deck which had been set up, lit and decorated in the party’s theme. I started the party in the waning light in the top deck seating area, where I served the hor d’oeurves and cocktails to our guests.
Wait till you see the fabulous custom cocktail I served… it matched the party’s decor! Very cool…
I practice what I preach, as you’ll see in the picture of the pre-party buffet setup, one of my 11 Pro Party Tips for a Fabulous Party (you can find this in the IFAFL Subscriber Resource Library) is to test out the arrangement of your serving dishes/platters to see how they will work for your guests serving themselves. (i.e., messy foods should be at the front of the buffet)
Once you’re satisfied with the arrangement, place the serving utensil next to the serving dish so your guests won’t be left without a serving spoon in your rush to “drop” the food on the buffet for dinner service.
