apple dust sugar hang tags

APPLE DUST SUGAR is the perfect crunchy topping for cakes, pies or even ice cream!

If you want to add a ton of apple essence to a sweet recipe, then Apple Dust Sugar delivers it with some to spare! But, if you want to add some of that apple flavor to a savory dish, like a lovely pork loin, just add Apple Dust to your sauce!

Once you’ve made the Apple Dust, you can use it as is, or add some sugar to make it a lovely sweet and fruity dessert topping. I like to make my Apple Dust Sugar with large-crystal sparkling sugar for lots of crunch too.

And here’s the very first recipe that uses your Apple Dust Sugar!  You’ll definitely want to try my Autumn Almond Apple Cake with Apple Dust Sugar!

The taste of Autumn laced with tangy apples and topped with crunchy Apple Dust Sugar.  This moist cake is addictive, especially when paired with a creamy scoop of vanilla ice cream.   Tangy apples, cinnamon and a touch of almond makes this cake an extra special addition to any Fall menu!  I love it for breakfast too!

apple dust sugar ingredients and equipment

It doesn’t matter whether you use a food dehydrator or your oven, you just want to dry a whole pile of thinly sliced apples.  If you use the oven, it might take a bit longer at 200°F, but they’ll turn out just fine.  My apple slices took about 6 hours at the highest setting on my dehydrator.

  • Before drying your apple slices, place them in cold water with lemon slices and juice.  By soaking the fruit for 5 minutes, your apples will stay much whiter during the drying process.
  • Using a mandolin to thinly slice the apples will make the job much easier. NO, they don’t have to be peeled, just very thinly sliced.
  • The time required to completely dry the apple slices for your Apple Dust Sugar will vary according to the method used.  The thickness of the apple slices will also be a factor, so keep them thin.

Once the dried apples slices have cooled, you’ll want to pulverize them into a fine dust without any lumps.  I highly recommend using a coffee grinder-type machine for the job.  I use mine exclusively for spices, so I don’t need to worry about coffee ground residue in my spices!

If you want to keep some of the Apple Dust for both sweet and savory use, package some of it up and label accordingly.  Then you can add sugar to the rest and have a wonderfully crunchy, sweet, apple-laced Apple Dust Sugar!

Now that you’ve got all that Apple Dust and Apple Dust Sugar, what will you do with it all?

Intense apple flavor, in a crunchy sugar topping! Apple Dust Sugar is perfect sprinkled on cakes, ice cream or even in your favorite fruity Fall pie recipes!

  • SPECIAL EQUIPMENT - Dehydrator or Oven

  • 2 lemons, thickly sliced

  1. Fill a large bowl halfway with cold water and add apple slices. Layer lemon slices on top of apples, squeezing some juice from each first. Let sit for 5 minutes.
  2. Place apple slices in your dehydrator in a single layer and dry as directed in dehydrator instruction manual. Or, place on rimmed baking sheets in a 200° F. oven until completely dried and leathery. (about 6 hours) Let cool completely.
  3. Using your food processor or a spice/coffee grinder, pulverize the dried apples into "dust".
  4. Combine the "apple dust" with the sugar and keep in a tightly covered container for up to 6 months.
